Shorebirds from Tierra del Fuego

This group of birds living in the fuegian shores during the summer season, except migratory species that normally breed in the northern hemisphere and travel to their food territories in the austral summer. Some residents like the common steam duck, the beachy cauquen or the carancho have a special adaptation that involves the occupation of the coastal environment all year, constituting interesting cases of endemism. Other easy watching birds in this environment are the oystercatchers, the snipes, the skimmers, plovers, etc..

Some species that nest in inland water bodies, such as the hooded, moving to the coast in winter. Also, most of the ducks frequent the bays near the mouths of rivers in search of food. These groups, despite their seasonal occurrence in coastal waters, are considered as characteristic of inland waters. The reverse situation is registered with the Patagonian and Antarctic remolineras that forage in lakes and ponds also inland, where sporadically come to nest. Similarly there have been colonies of nesting cormorants on Lake Yehuin.
